House Passes FISA “Modernization”
The House has passed Bush’s FISA “modernization” bill. The bill makes the NSA’s warrantless wiretaps legal, and makes it considerably easier for them to spy on U.S. citizens. This bill was largely forced on Congress by the administration, who said it was ‘necessary ‘ to find potential terrorists. According to a Washington Post article:
“There are a lot of people who felt we had to pass something,” said one angry Democratic lawmaker who spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of caucus discussions. “It was tantamount to being railroaded.”
Not all is lost. This bill only last six months, during that time we must demand our congressmen investigate the NSA’s spying activities more thoroughly. We must continue to remind our congressmen that we do not want warrantless wiretaps.
